Program Funds Internships At Participating Dallas Organizations, Providing an Opportunity for College Students to Spend the Summer Learning the Value of Community Service.
DALLAS, Texas (February 25, 2002) -- ExxonMobil Foundation and the Volunteer Center of Dallas County announced today the 75 Dallas-area nonprofit organizations selected to participate in the 2002 ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.
The program, now in its 12th year in Dallas, is funded by ExxonMobil and administered through the Volunteer Center of Dallas County. It provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid internship that allows them to gain experience in a wide range of nonprofit community organizations. In 2002, ExxonMobil will provide grants totaling more than $182,000 for interns' salaries and Volunteer Center expenses.
"ExxonMobil strongly believes in investing in communities where we live and work, and the Community Summer Jobs Program is one of our most successful signature programs," said Ken Cohen, ExxonMobil's vice president for public affairs. "Through this program, talented college students are introduced to opportunities in the nonprofit field and, in turn, provide vital services to the city of Dallas through their internships."
In addition, ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program offers training to participating organizations in recruiting and selecting interns, and provides assistance in organizing the summer internships.
"For the past 12 years, ExxonMobil has been providing much needed support for nonprofit organizations in Dallas and offering college students a unique learning experience," said Julie Thomas, executive director of the Volunteer Center. "Nonprofit agencies are given extra help during busy summer months, and interns walk away with hands-on experience that they can relate to their studies in the fall and future careers. The interns are also able to see the value each organization has in our community."
Since 1971, ExxonMobil has provided more than $3.5 million to support the Community Summer Jobs Program in eight states including: Alabama, Alaska, California, Louisiana, Montana, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming. In the Dallas program, ExxonMobil has provided more than $1.8 million to place more than 850 college students in internships.
College students interested in internship positions may contact the selected agencies, Dallas-area university career planning and placement offices, or Tanya Blakeley at the Volunteer Center of Dallas County. For a list of participating agencies, internship applicants should send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Tanya Blakeley, c/o the Volunteer Center of North Texas, 2800 Live Oak, Dallas, Texas 75204, or contact their web site at www.volunteernorthtexas.org.
